Comment
The Uppsala Conflict Data Program compiles a register of “events” – that is, cases of violence leading to death – from multiple sources. These estimates can sometimes be lower than they are in reality, since not all cases are reported. The graphs show the chronology of numbers killed in states where more than 10,000 deaths have been recorded since 1989. The scale of the Rwandan genocide (1994) is striking. Some states display numerous deaths throughout the period (Sudan, Somalia, India, Afghanistan); other conflicts seem, in principle, to be resolved (Angola, Bosnia, etc.), while yet others are more recent (Nigeria, Yemen and Syria).
